Traveling to The North Fork
North Fork – Long Island
My trip to the North Fork was pretty last minute and somewhere I never really thought about going until we booked it, but now after visiting I can’t wait to go back!! I planned the trip with my boyfriend and it was right around my birthday so we just wanted to do something fun to celebrate. We are from New Jersey, so it was easy to go for just two nights.
We drove up from Jersey on a Friday night, so there was definitely a little traffic, but nothing terrible! We both work regular jobs, so we got on the road once we were both out so we arrived at the bed and breakfast we booked in Greenport around 9 that night. Neither of us had ever stayed at a bed and breakfast before so we were not sure what to expect, but it turned out to be amazing!
Sleep
When we pulled up to Ruby’s Cove we were greeted out front by the innkeeper, Donna – she was soooo welcoming and friendly it made the whole experience fun right from the beginning. We were barely in the door before we had drinks in our hand – she really wants everyone to relax and enjoy every minute of their stay! Donna showed us around and made us feel right at home. The house was so charming inside and had a porch around the front where it was really nice to sit and have a drink at night.
Ruby’s Cove has three rooms, so there were two other couples staying that weekend. We got to hang out before breakfast and enjoy the house. We had breakfast all together both mornings – breakfast was delicious!! Since this was our first time at a bed and breakfast we didn’t know what to expect, but it was really fun to sit and have breakfast with the other couples.
Eat
We originally picked Ruby’s because it was right in the town of Greenport. Since we got there a little later and we were super hungry we just walked across the street to a little restaurant called 1943 Pizza Bar (link). We walked into the cutest restaurant – there was a deck outside with heaters. We were there in early November so it was a little chilly, but we got to sit outside and it was perfect! We ordered the marinated olives, wood fired meatballs and a classic margarita pizza. We had a few drinks, the food was great and the atmosphere was so charming – we loved it!
The second night we decided to go to Lucharito’s Taqueria & Bar (link) – it looked like a casual mexican place right in town. We went in around dinner time and it was packed!! We were lucky to get a spot at the bar and we had a really fun time – we got some margaritas, tacos, quesadillas.
Drink
Our plan when we went out here for the weekend was to just relax and visit a few wineries, so this day definitely involved a lot of drinking! After breakfast at Ruby’s we borrowed some bikes that Donna had in the yard and went for a ride to explore the town a little more. We decided to ride to Kontokosta Winery (link) – it was a little bit of a ride, but it was a really nice fall day and it was definitely worth it. This winery was a little expensive, but there weren’t a lot of people there and it was really nice. First we did a tasting inside and then we got a glass of wine and walked around outside. We walked all the way out to the end where the winery backs up to the Long Island Sound – it was really pretty here and I was definitely happy we went here for at least one drink!
Our next stop was Osprey’s Dominion. We rode our bikes back to the bed and breakfast and got a taxi because this winery was a little further. This one was very fun and had way more people than the last. We went inside and did a tasting – it was definitely less expensive here. The atmosphere was really fun here, so we decided to get a bottle here and sit outside. They had a lot of picnic tables outside and a food truck to get lunch. It was so nice to sit outside here and enjoy the weather – I would definitely go back here next time!
Transportation wasn’t the easiest around here – we didn’t realize before we went, but they don’t have Uber in this area – so when we were ready to go to the next winery we just picked a spot that was close enough that we could walk. We decided to go to Mattebella Vineyards since it was right down the street. This one was a little different because there was actually seating. We didn’t do a tasting here, we just sat and ordered a bottle of rose – they have couches, which was really nice and comfy. It was getting later and was a little chilly outside and they also had blankets on the couches, which made this place really cozy. Every winery we went to was a little different, which made the day really fun!
All around we did had a really amazing weekend. I can’t wait to go back and stay at Ruby’s Cove! The wineries we chose were perfect and the food we ate was all so good! I really enjoyed everything we did – there are so many wineries in the area, so we really just picked at random, but I loved everywhere we picked. I can’t wait to go back and experience more!
